Ragen Chastain aka “Dances with Fat” aka “IronFat” recently wrote an article titled “The truth about weight loss surgery“. The short and purely anecdotal article tells a story of her fans reaching out to her because their loved ones all died from weight loss surgery. She doesn’t give any details about their health or how well they were informed about the risks any surgery entails when you are morbidly obese. She just wanted to write something to scare people from losing weight.
People are allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies, regardless of the reason or risk. That doesn’t change the truth about weight loss surgery: some people are happy with the outcome, some people have horrific lifelong side-effects, some people regain their weight but keep their horrific lifelong side effects, and some people die. And there’s no way to know which group you are going to be in until you are in it.
-Ragen Chastain
You may have noticed there seems to be some very biased language in the quote above and an alarming lack of any facts, studies or statistics. Ragen keeps her statements vague at all times, but the real numbers won’t lie. Some fat activists lie and mislead, one of them is named Ragen Chastain.
Before we go into the actual mortality numbers I want to make it clear that I’m not a fan of weightloss surgery. I feel like it’s a bandaid that doesn’t fix the underlying issues that result in obesity. There is plenty you can do on your own to get where you need to be and those actions will result in healthy life choices that create a much better life. That being said I also won’t shame someone for taking steps towards losing the weight that is killing them. Fat Acceptance advocates hate weight loss surgery though, and have even attempted failed campaigns against it. Why do they hate it so much?
Is it because weight loss surgery proves weightloss is as simple as calories in vs. calories out?
Is it because their friends are waking up to the damage obesity is doing and are taking drastic actions to get escape the misery of obesity?
Is it because shows like My 600LB Life have shown that any fatty can drop down to a human size with just the smallest amount of effort?
We will probably never know, fatties will cling to the idea that being morbidly obese is healthy and fine, no matter what facts are presented to them. Fat Acceptance historically only accepts the truth that benefits their narrative, as I will prove once again.
While Ragen claims her article is the “truth” about weight loss surgery the facts prove her wrong, time and time again. Several sources have shown that the mortality rate is actually extremely low, and most of the complications are not exclusive to weight loss surgery! Not only is the mortality rate far lower than Ragen’s anecdotal 100%, but the JAMA article shows the survival rate of post weight loss surgery’s to be 10X higher than their obese counterparts. With a 5 year mortality rate of 0.68% to 6% it becomes clear that living life while morbidly obese is more dangerous than getting cut open and having weight loss surgery.
A follow-up study of patients at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, from 1986 to 2002 compared obese patients who did not undergo bariatric surgery with those who did and reported an extraordinarily low (0.68%) 5-year mortality compared with 6% among the obese controls.
The real truth about weightloss surgery is people are willing to go to extremes to shed the body weight that came from a life of poor choices. The truth about fat activists is that they simply can’t be trusted.
