Imagine backing a product you believed in, and learning that despite numerous delays the product was successfully created. You would probably feel pretty good, right? Now imagine if by financially backing the product you were promised a copy of this product, but haven’t received it. Now imagine that the creators of this product have sold screenings of it at prices that range from $12–$35 a pop, all while asking for donations to continue screenings around the country. If you are wondering how that would feel you may want to ask Lindsay Averill and Viridiana Liebermanwho created this film, like so many others have but odds are you won’t get anywhere.
Currently Fattitude has screenings lined up until the end of may, they have a shop where you can buy merchandise, and as previous mentioned they are more than happy to accept donations so they can screen the film. Yes, they need donations to screen a film they are charging ticket prices for, on a product that was Kickstarted, and had 2 years of fundraising done after the Kickstarter was successfully backed.
Now don’t get the wrong impression I really don’t care if the backers ever get the film, they got suckered in to paying for a project with nothing to show for it while some fat acceptance advocates continue to shill for donations while selling tickets for a completed product. I’ve spoken out about Fattitude before and at this point there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that they will ever fulfill their promises to their backers. Despite this Fattitude is still extremely active on social media feel free to hit them up on Twitter or Facebook, and see if they have any reasons why they feel its fine to fuck over your backers.
So the question remains, why do the creators of this film, which is really just a pudgy propaganda piece, feel that its right to fuck over the people who made this possible? This is something of a trend among fatties who try to live off of Patreon and Kickstarter. Is this just something that is innate in the Fat Acceptance mindset? How can you be comfortable having taken thousand of dollars for something, asked for more, and more, and then start charging tickets for it all without ever fulfilling your promises to the people who made any of it possible?
