Last Year I wrote a piece about several notable young obese deaths, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 2016 isn’t any different. As part of a new effort to help catalog the deaths of the young and fat I’ll be posting about these more often under a brand new category Obesetuaries! Hopefully this will help disprove the fatlogic behind the concept of being obese and healthy.
Today we are going to focus on 43-year-old Carol Beverly who died from cardiac arrest at a staggering 420 pounds. Carol was so large that the paramedics were unable to remove her from her home as they required an extra-large stretcher capable of supporting 500 lbs. This specialty equipment wasn’t immediately available and Carol died as the puzzled paramedics struggled to figure out how they could remove her.

Carol weighed nearly a quarter of a ton before she died at the age of 43, which most fat activists would probably say is a normal life span.
All of this could have actually been avoided if Carol stayed in the hospital that she check into just the day before! Carol was admitted for a urinary tract infection, which is surprisingly common among the obese, still after being there for just a single day she signed herself out because she didn’t like the experience. What was that experience exactly? We may never know but I have a strong suspicion that the late Ms. Beverly didn’t want to stay in an environment where she felt fat shamed for her conditions. She probably didn’t want to hear about how dangerous her weight was, and how she was living on borrowed time unless she really made some changes to her life. I believe that Carol opted to sign herself out so she could go back to her parents home and live in blissful self-imposed ignorance, but she didn’t know it would be short-lived. If she had stayed in the hospital her chances of survival would have been much higher and she would not have died in her parents home as paramedics have to run all over the county looking for a stretcher that could support the weight of a quarter ton.
